What Is Musculoskeletal Ultrasound Assessment?

Musculoskeletal ultrasound uses ultrasound imaging to assess structures beneath the skin, including muscles, tendons, ligaments and other soft tissues.

During your physiotherapy assessment, ultrasound may be used where it can provide useful additional information about your symptoms.

It can complement your clinical examination and help your Physiotherapist explain the findings and plan appropriate treatment.

Who May Benefit?

Physiotherapy with ultrasound assessment may be suitable if you have:

✓ Persistent muscle, tendon or joint pain

✓ An injury that is not improving as expected

✓ Pain affecting work, exercise or everyday activities

✓ A sports or activity-related injury

✓ Symptoms where further assessment may help guide rehabilitation

✓ Questions about what may be causing your symptoms

Your Physiotherapist will assess whether ultrasound is appropriate for your individual presentation.

Why Combine Physiotherapy & Ultrasound?

Ultrasound assessment can provide additional information alongside your physiotherapy examination.

Combining the two allows your clinician to:

✓ Assess your symptoms clinically

✓ Use ultrasound where appropriate

✓ Explain the findings clearly

✓ Consider the most appropriate treatment options

✓ Build a rehabilitation plan around your goals

Is Ultrasound Assessment Safe?

Diagnostic musculoskeletal ultrasound is a non-invasive assessment technique that uses sound waves to produce images of structures beneath the skin.

There are no injections or needles involved in an ultrasound assessment.

Your Physiotherapist will explain the assessment and answer any questions you have before proceeding.
